
North Sea air, the sound of waves and Nordic hospitality await you on this beautiful bike tour from Esbjerg to Hamburg. Thatched houses, red and white striped lighthouses, the 12-kilometer-long sandy beach of St. Peter-Ording and the isles of Fanø, Rømø and Sylt want to be discovered. Not to forget the seemingly endless view over the North Sea and the sheep grazing on the dikes. For this longer tour on the North Sea Cycle Route from Esbjerg to Hamburg, you should bring some basic fitness with you.


Day 1 Arrival in Esbjerg
The starting point is the Danish town of Esbjerg. Take a trip to Sædding Strand, where the famous sculpture ‘Man by the Sea’ is located.
Day 2 Esbjerg - Ribe, 35-70 km / 22-43 mi
If you wish, you can start with an excursion to the island of Fanø through dunes, beach forests and mudflats. Back on the mainland, we head to Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark. The two unequal towers of the cathedral greet you from afar.
Day 3 Ribe - Havneby, approx. 50 km / 31 mi
Cycle over the causeway to the island of Rømø. Discover the whale bone fence, a whale skeleton in the Kommandørgården museum and the Rømø church dating back to 1200.
Day 4 Round trip on Sylt, 20-35 km / 12-22 mi
+ ferry & train journey
Ferry trip to Sylt. You cycle along well-maintained cycle paths through a varied landscape of dunes and heathland and charming villages. The train takes you to the North Frisian town of Niebüll.
Day 5 Niebüll - Husum, 50-70 km / 31-43 mi
Today you cycle along the coast, a detour to the Hamburg Hallig is worthwhile. Husum presents itself as a colourful and lively harbour town.
Day 6 Husum - Tönning, 30-35 km / 17-22 mi
The cycle tour leads through the green hinterland. It is worth stopping in Friedrichstadt, founded in the 18th century by Dutch settlers.
Day 7 Excursion St. Peter-Ording, 40-65 km / 25-40 mi
Take the train to St. Peter-Ording with its 12 km long sandy beach. Visit the Westerhever lighthouse, the most famous in Germany.
Day 8 Tönning - St. Michaelisdonn, 60-70 km / 37-43 mi
The North Sea is calling! How about a stop for a crab roll in Büsum? The landmark of St. Michaelisdonn is Edda, a Dutch windmill.
Day 9 St. Michaelisdonn - Glückstadt, 50 km / 31 mi
Cycling on through Dithmarschen, you reach Brunsbüttel and the Kiel Canal.A culinary speciality awaits you in Glückstadt, the Glückstädter Matjes.
Day 10 Glückstadt - Hamburg, 70 km / 43 mi
The last day takes you along the Elbe to your destination Hamburg. Enjoy the modern metropolis with a long history - there is a lot to discover.
Day 11 Departure or extension
